Step-by-step guide to replacing your Game Gear display with a 3.5 inch composite LCD. Compatible only with V1 CleanScreen or Hispeedido backlight kits.
Quick answer
Install the 3.5 inch composite LCD by connecting it to a compatible V1 CleanScreen or Hispeedido flex cable. This screen is not for standalone use or newer V4/V5 kits.
Know your kit version first
This 3.5 inch LCD works only with the RetroSix CleanScreen V1 or the Hispeedido Game Gear Backlight LCD Kit (Touch Version). It does not support V4 or V5 CleanScreen boards. Check your existing flex cable before ordering or starting the install.
Installation steps
- Disassemble the Game Gear: Remove the battery cover, batteries, and all screws. Separate the front and back shells. Disconnect the speaker and power board ribbon cables. Lift the main board out. Keep screws organized by length to avoid stripping the plastic posts.
- Remove the old LCD and backlight: Desolder the two wires from the original screen (if present). Gently peel the old LCD away from the adhesive. Remove any remaining foam or tape from the LCD recess. Do not pry under the LCD glass—lift from the edge of the metal frame to avoid cracking the new screen later.
- Attach the new LCD to the flex cable: Place the 3.5 inch LCD face down on a clean surface. Align the pre-attached ribbon cable on the screen with the ZIF connector on your V1 CleanScreen or Hispeedido flex cable. Flip the latch, insert the ribbon, and close the latch. Ensure the ribbon is fully inserted and straight before locking. A crooked connection can cause lines or no display.
- Mount the screen in the shell: Peel the backing from the adhesive on the LCD or apply double-sided tape to the LCD recess. Position the screen so it sits flat and centered. Press gently to secure. Check that no wires or components are pinched under the screen before pressing down.
- Reassemble and test: Reinsert the main board, reconnect the speaker and power board ribbons, and close the shell without fully tightening screws. Power on the console and test brightness and scaling modes. If the screen stays dark, verify the flex cable connection and that the brightness wheel is not at minimum. Test before final assembly.
