Match the right speaker to your Game Boy model and follow a clean install process. Covers DMG, Color, and Advance speakers, wiring, and common mistakes.

Quick answer

Buy the speaker made for your exact model—DMG, Color, or Advance—and remove the old one before soldering. If your Game Boy is silent, the speaker is the usual suspect, but check the headphone jack and amp first.

Why model-specific speakers matter

A speaker that fits one Game Boy shell will not fit another. The DMG, Color, and Advance use different mounting points and wire lengths, so a generic speaker often ends up glued, trimmed, or forced into place. That stress can crack the cone or short the voice coil.

All three speakers here share an 8 ohm, 1 watt rating, but the physical size and connector differ. Buying the version labeled for your console avoids guesswork and keeps the install reversible.

When the problem isn't the speaker

If you hear sound through headphones but not the speaker, the speaker or its wiring is likely at fault. If you hear nothing through either, the issue may be the headphone jack switch, a blown amp, or a board-level fault. Replacing the speaker won't fix those.

On a Game Boy Color, a wire-free audio kit can simplify the job, but it changes how the speaker connects. Decide whether you're keeping the original wiring before you buy.

Step-by-step speaker replacement

  1. Identify your model and buy the matching speaker: Check the label or shell shape: DMG (original), Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance. Order the speaker listed for that model—do not try to make one fit another. A speaker for the wrong model will not mount correctly, even if the impedance matches.
  2. Open the console and remove the old speaker: Take out the battery, unscrew the shell, and lift out the speaker. Note which wire goes to which pad before desoldering. On a GBA or GBC, the speaker may be held by plastic tabs—release them gently. Photograph the wire routing before you desolder; it prevents reversed polarity.
  3. Prepare the new speaker's wires: If your speaker has a connector (GBA and GBC versions), cut it off and strip about 2 mm of insulation from each wire. Tin the wire ends and the board pads with a small amount of solder. Cut the connector off only after you've confirmed the speaker fits the mount.
  4. Solder the speaker to the board: Match polarity: the red wire usually goes to the positive pad. Solder quickly—two to three seconds per joint—and avoid touching the cone with the iron. A cold joint or a blob that bridges both pads will cause silence or distortion.
  5. Test before closing the shell: Reconnect the battery and power on with a game that has known audio. Adjust the volume wheel and check for clean sound at low and high volume. If it's silent, recheck the solder joints and polarity. Testing before reassembly saves you from opening the shell twice.
  6. Reassemble and check fit: Seat the speaker in its mount, route wires away from screw posts, and close the shell. Play a few minutes of audio to confirm nothing rattles or cuts out when the shell is tightened. A pinched wire can short only when the shell is closed, so test after assembly too.

Speakers by model

  • Game Boy DMG Clear Speaker - Funnyplaying: Clear 8 ohm 1 watt speaker for the Game Boy DMG with pre-soldered wires. The clear body lets you check the cone and wiring before closing the shell, and the pre-soldered leads save a fiddly step.

  • Game Boy Advance Colored Speakers - Cloud Game Store: Game Boy Advance speaker in multiple colors, 8 ohm 1 watt, with pre-soldered wires and a connector that can be trimmed. You can match the shell color, but you must remove the connector before soldering to the GBA board.

  • Game Boy Color Colored Speakers - Cloud Game Store: Game Boy Color speaker in multiple colors, 8 ohm 1 watt, with pre-soldered wires and a connector that can be trimmed. The connector is not used on a stock GBC install, so plan to cut it off and solder the bare wires.
