Game Boy Advance SP Shell Replacement Guide: IPS vs OEM

Learn how to replace your Game Boy Advance SP shell. This guide covers choosing between an IPS modified shell and an OEM style shell, with step-by-step instructions for a successful swap.

Quick answer

Choose an IPS modified shell if you plan to upgrade your screen; choose an OEM style replacement if you want an original look and are willing to trim for mods. Both options restore a worn-out GBA SP housing.

IPS Modified vs OEM Style Shells

The main difference between these two shell types is the screen opening. An IPS modified shell has a larger cutout that fits popular IPS LCD backlight kits without any trimming. An OEM style shell has the original smaller opening and requires you to cut plastic if you install an IPS screen. Consider your modding plans before buying.

Both shells are made from high quality ABS plastic, so durability is similar. The IPS modified shell includes a full set of buttons, bumper springs and rods, a power switch, screw covers, and shell screws. The OEM style shell includes buttons, a power switch, silicone membranes, and shell screws. Check the included parts list to see if you need to order any extra items separately.

Tools You Will Need

Before starting, gather a tri-wing screwdriver (Y1 or Y0), a Phillips #00 screwdriver, a plastic spudger or opening tool, tweezers, and a clean workspace. If you are installing an IPS screen in an OEM style shell, you will also need a small file or rotary tool to trim the plastic. Having a magnetic screw mat helps keep tiny screws organized.

Step-by-Step Shell Replacement

  1. 1. Remove the battery and back cover: Slide the battery cover off and remove the battery. Use a tri-wing screwdriver to remove the six screws on the back of the GBA SP. Set them aside in order. Screws are different lengths; keep track of where each one came from.
  2. 2. Separate the front and back halves: Gently pry the two shell halves apart using a plastic spudger. Start near the hinge area and work your way around. The power switch and volume wheel may fall out—set them aside. Do not force the halves apart; check for hidden clips near the screen.
  3. 3. Transfer the motherboard and components: Carefully lift the motherboard out of the front shell. Desolder the speaker if needed, then move the speaker, power switch, volume wheel, and any other loose parts to the new shell. Install new silicone membranes if your replacement shell includes them. The L and R shoulder buttons have small springs that can easily fly out; work over a tray.
  4. 4. Install the screen (if upgrading): If you are using an IPS modified shell, drop the IPS screen into the larger opening and secure it with the provided adhesive. For an OEM style shell, trim the plastic opening with a file or rotary tool until the IPS screen fits snugly. Test the screen fit before applying adhesive to avoid repositioning issues.
  5. 5. Reassemble the shell: Place the motherboard back into the front shell, ensuring all buttons and the power switch align. Snap the back shell into place and reinstall the screws in the correct order. Insert the battery and replace the battery cover. Tighten screws gently to avoid stripping the plastic threads.
  6. 6. Test all functions: Power on the GBA SP and test the power switch, volume wheel, shoulder buttons, A/B buttons, D-pad, and screen brightness. If something feels off, open the shell and check alignment. If the power switch feels stiff, the plastic tab may be slightly misaligned; adjust it before tightening fully.
