Learn how to install the Robot_Retro USB-C charging module in your Game Boy Advance SP, including soldering tips, spacer use, and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick Answer

Install the Robot_Retro USB-C charging module by removing the original power port from your GBA SP motherboard, soldering the new USB-C port in its place, and optionally adding the 3D-printed spacer for a secure fit.

Why Upgrade to USB-C?

Upgrading your Game Boy Advance SP to USB-C charging lets you use modern chargers and cables you already own, instead of hunting for the original proprietary charger. The Robot_Retro module supports both USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables, so it works with most current power adapters and power banks.

This is a soldering project, so it's not for everyone. If you're not comfortable with basic soldering, consider asking a friend with experience or a local repair shop to do the installation. The reward is a cleaner, more convenient charging experience for your retro handheld.

What You'll Need

Before starting, gather a soldering iron, solder, flux, a desoldering wick or solder sucker, a small Phillips screwdriver, and the Robot_Retro USB-C module. The optional 3D-printed spacer is sold separately and helps fill the gap left by the original port, making the mod look more finished.

Work in a well-lit area with good ventilation. Take your time and double-check each step before moving on.

Installation Steps

  1. Open the console: Remove the six screws on the back of the GBA SP and carefully separate the front and back shells. Lift the motherboard out gently. Keep track of which screw goes where; they are not all the same length.
  2. Remove the old power port: Use a soldering iron and desoldering wick or solder sucker to remove the solder from the original power port pins. Gently pull the port free from the motherboard. Apply even heat and avoid prying hard, or you may lift the solder pads.
  3. Clean the solder pads: Use solder wick and flux to remove any remaining solder and debris from the pads. This ensures a clean surface for the new module. A clean pad makes a stronger joint and reduces the risk of cold solder joints.
  4. Position the USB-C module: Place the Robot_Retro USB-C module onto the pads, aligning the pins with the holes. If you plan to use the spacer, position it now. Double-check alignment before soldering; it's hard to fix once the solder flows.
  5. Solder the module: Apply solder to each pad, ensuring a shiny, cone-shaped joint. Avoid bridging between pins. If you bridge pins, use desoldering wick to remove the excess solder and redo the joint.
  6. Reassemble and test: Place the motherboard back in the shell, reattach the front and back halves, and screw everything together. Plug in a USB-C cable to test charging. If it doesn't charge, double-check your solder joints and alignment before reassembling fully.
