Learn how to make your GC Ultimate controller's ABXY buttons clicky with this solder-free tactile button kit. Step-by-step installation guide with tips.
Quick answer
Use the Tactile Button Kit for GC Ultimate to add clicky feedback to your ABXY buttons without soldering. The kit includes a flex cable with tactile switches and adhesive pads for a clean install.
Why add tactile buttons?
Standard GameCube controller buttons feel mushy to some players. Tactile switches provide a crisp click with each press, which can improve responsiveness in competitive games. The kit is designed specifically for the GC Ultimate controller and preserves RGB lighting through cut-outs in the flex cable.
What’s in the kit?
The Tactile Button Kit for GC Ultimate includes 5 silicone sticky pads, one FPC flex cable with pre-attached tactile buttons, and an installation video link. The switches have a 100gf (1N) press force and are rated for 1 million presses. No soldering iron or special tools are needed.
Installation steps
- 1. Open your GC Ultimate controller: Remove the six screws on the back of the controller using a Phillips #00 screwdriver. Gently separate the front and back shells. Disconnect the battery if your controller is wireless. Keep track of screws; they are small and easy to lose.
- 2. Remove the original ABXY button membrane: Lift the silicone rubber membrane under the ABXY buttons. Set it aside. You won’t need it anymore because the tactile kit replaces its function. Do not discard the membrane until you confirm the kit fits correctly.
- 3. Peel and place the silicone sticky pads: Peel the backing from one silicone sticky pad and place it on the PCB where the ABXY button contacts are. Repeat for all four buttons. The pads hold the flex cable in place and prevent short circuits. Align the pad exactly over the contact area; misalignment can cause unresponsive buttons.
- 4. Attach the FPC flex cable: Position the flex cable over the sticky pads so the tactile switches line up with the ABXY button holes. Press down gently to secure the cable. Ensure the ribbon connector end is free to plug into the controller’s mainboard. Check that the cut-outs in the flex cable align with the RGB LEDs if your controller has them.
- 5. Connect the flex cable to the mainboard: Locate the FPC connector on the mainboard (usually near the ABXY area). Open the connector latch, insert the flex cable with the gold contacts facing down, and close the latch firmly. Insert the cable straight and fully; a crooked insertion can damage the connector pins.
- 6. Reassemble and test: Place the front shell back on, secure all six screws, and reconnect the battery if applicable. Press each ABXY button to feel the click. If any button feels off, reopen and check the alignment or cable connection. Test all buttons before fully tightening the screws to avoid repeated disassembly.
